Derry has a history dating back to the 6th century monastic community founded by Saint Colmcille. It is a walled city built in the early 17th century as a garrison town part of the Plantation of Ulster. It was in Derry that the "Battle of the Bogside" took place in August 1969 and is known as "The Day the Troubles Began".
