The 40th Galway International Arts Festival is one of the most important cultural events in Europe. During a whirlwind two weeks every July, writers, musicians, performers and artists descend on the city in a creative collision. Past acts have included world premieres, fire breathing dragons and compelling art. It’s the beating heart of Galway, and an unforgettable cultural pilgrimage.
Acts already confirmed for this year's Festival include The Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, who will present Pet Sounds in its entirety; a major exhibition of sculpture by Brazilian artist Ana Maria Pacheco, titled Dark Night of the Soul; a new Festival commission by Irish artist John Gerrard (co-commissioned with the Thomas Dane Gallery, London), and one of the hottest singer/songwriters of the year, Gavin James, who will headline the Absolut Big Top. 'Let Her Go' singer songwriter Mike Rosenberg, better known as Passenger, will also take to the Absolut Big Top stage, with special guests, Irish duo Hudson Taylor.
This year, the festival presents four world premiere theatre productions, one of which has just been announced, Woyzeck in Winter. The 'spectacular' production of Tristan & Yseult by Kneehigh will take to the Town Hall Theatre stage, and promises to be an exceptional theatrical experience. World-class theatre company Druid's Crestfall will also take to the stage as part of our theatre line-up. They have an inspiring First Thought program lined up, in addition to awe-inspiring European Street Theatre and with 2017 marking such an important milestone for the Festival.
